VERTIGO
Symptoms of dizziness can present for short periods of time or persist constantly depending on the severity of the problem. Other than situational causes like looking down from great heights or taking a ride on a roller coaster, there are medical causes for dizziness that result in recurrent symptoms.
Recurrent dizziness is called vertigo and generally falls into one of four main categories:
- Cervicogenic Vertigo
- Benign Paroxysmal Peripheral Vertigo (BPPV)
- Neurogenic Vertigo
- Labrynthitis

VERTIGO CATEGORIES
Cervicogenic vertigo: is caused by misalignment of the neck joints which disorients the nervous system enough to result in dizziness. Often neck pain is associated but not always and so a thorough evaluation should be done to assess the alignment of the neck. A specific chiropractic adjustment to correct the joint dysfunction will restore proper alignment for treatment of the dizziness in this case.
BPPV or benign paroxysmal peripheral vertigo: is caused by small calcium crystals, called canaliths, within the inner ear which overstimulate the cupula. There are three different canals of the inner ear and any one or multiple canals may be affected. Treatment for this form of vertigo is accomplished with a repositioning maneuver called the Eply’s maneuver, Dix-Hallpike maneuver, Semont Maneuver or others, done by a chiropractor.
Lesion of the central nervous system can also cause vertigo, this needs to be evaluated by a neurologist for proper treatment and a referral to a specialist in the area will be provided by your chiropractor.
Infection of the inner ear: which is called labrynthitis, is another cause of vertigo. Sometimes the body just needs to fight the infection and then the symptoms will discontinue, other times it may be necessary to pursue treatment for the infection from your medical doctor. During your initial visit a thorough evaluation will determine the cause and best course of treatment for your particular case of vertigo. If a referral to a specialist is needed then it will be provided.
