HAND PAIN

Pain in the hand and wrist area is common from repetitive strain injuries but can be the result of an injury or other myopathy or arthritis condition as well. Often pain that shows up in the hand or wrist area is actually the result of other nerve entrapments in the forearm, shoulder or neck. These entrapments from other parts of the arm, shoulder or neck are called neuropathies and may be associated with numbness, tingling, weakness, or tightness as well. Some common causes of neuropathies include Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Pronator Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, T4 Syndrome, Radial Tunnel Syndrome. If the hand or wrist problem is coming from the neck then we consider cervical myelopathy, disc herniation, IVF spondylosis, or possible nerve root avulsion in cases of traction injuries.

Local issues related to the hand and wrist may include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Arthritis
  • Ganglion Cyst
  • Tendonitis
  • De Quervains Tenosynovitis
  • Wartenberg’s Syndrome

TREATMENT

Treatment for hand and wrist pain requires a good diagnosis for effective therapy. By thoroughly evaluating the neck, upper back, shoulder, arm, wrist and hand we can differentiate between peripheral neuropathy and local issues affecting the hand and wrist. Treatment includes chiropractic adjustment, trigger point therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises. It is often important to modify aggravating activities at work and at home to promote healing and prevent future relapse.
