Neuropathy Treatment

Neuropathy refers to neurological symptoms of numbness, tingling, weakness, cramping or pain resulting from pressure or damage to nerves or even the spinal cord. These nerves could be peripheral nerves located in the extremities (like the arm or legs) or spinal nerve roots located close to the spine where they exit the spinal canal. Pressure on these nerves can be from:

  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Injured discs
  • Arthritis
  • T4 Syndrome
  • Stenosis
  • Scar Tissue
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Other Types of Neuropathy

Neuropathy can also result from diabetes where high levels of blood sugar actually damage the nerves. This mostly happens in the legs and feet but can affect other areas of the body like the eye. Auditory neuropathy affects hearing and is more related to the inner ear and the cranial region of the nervous system. Bells Palsey is another form of neuropathy that affects the head and face with symptoms of numbness, weakness, tingling and pain. Neuropathy can also be caused by stroke. These other types of neuropathy are not treated by chiropractors, however chiropractors are trained to differentiate between all forms of neuropathy to help the patient reach a confident diagnosis after an exam.

Treatment

Musculoskeletal causes of neuropathy involve taking pressure off of the nerve related to the neuropathy. Balancing alignment, reducing muscle spasm, addressing adhesions around the nerves are the goals of treatment. This should involve chiropractic adjustments, tissue therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises and possibly some traction or physiotherapy. Consult your chiropractor regarding neuropathy treatment for you specific condition.
