Knee Pain

Pain and injury related to the knee joint can result from sudden trauma, more gradual strain over time or even degenerative changes in the bone and cartilage. The knee joint contains a unique structure called the meniscus which acts as extra shock absorption and additional protection against wear and tear over time. It’s also one of the few joints that actually possess stabilizing ligaments within the joint capsule itself, they are called the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL). The patellar bone also forms a pseudo-joint over the top of the knee joint which can cause problems as well.

Some common conditions related to the knee are:

  • ITB Syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shin Splints
  • Meniscus Tear
  • Bursitis
  • Patellar Tracking Disorder
  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament Tear
  • Osgood Schlatter Disease

Other conditions that affect the knee but are not treated with chiropractic may include a blood clot or baker cyst behind the knee joint. These both can cause swelling and tenderness along with stiffness while walking or moving through a range of motion.

Treatment for Knee Pain

The knee requires proper biomechanics in order to glide smoothly during gait. Alignment of the knee joint and symmetry in the muscles that stabilize the knee are essential for maintaining this biomechanical integrity. Chiropractic adjustments, trigger point release therapy, stretches and strengthening exercises with other home therapies aim to recondition the knee joint. Assessing the foot, hip and pelvis for imbalances that may be affecting the knee are also an important part of a thorough approach to treatment.
