Foot Pain

The foot contains 26 bones held together by a sophisticated network of ligaments, fascia and tendons that provide structural support with load bearing activities like walking, running, and jumping.  How well all of these elements work together determines the integrity of the arch and biomechanics required for proper gait.  The foot is the base of the kinetic chain that connects the knee, hip, pelvis, low back and even upper back and shoulders.  Conditions related to the foot can be related to sudden trauma like a sprain,  repetitive trauma over time like plantar fasciitis or stress fracture, neuropathy related conditions like sciatica or diabetes, or even arthritis.

Below are some foot related conditions commonly treated in our chiropractic office:

  • Strain or Sprain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Mortons Neuroma
  • Heel Spur
  • Arthritis
  • Stress Fracture
  • Achilles Tendonitis

Diagnosis for Foot Pain

A good history, range of motions tests, palpation, and orthopedic and neurological tests in our chiropractic office can determine most issues related to the foot and ankle.  Sometimes special tests like X-ray or MRI are required to gain more clarity and occasionally a referral to a specialist may be needed for more complex cases.

Treatment

Once the problem has been determined then a plan is assembled to resolve the complaint.  Chiropractic adjustments to the joints in the foot and ankle, and even knee and pelvis help to normalize altered biomechanics and encourage the body to heal.  Trigger point release, home therapies, stretches and strengthening exercises may be advised as part of the recovery process.  The timeline for resolution depends on the patients overall health, the extent of the injury and compliance with treatment plan recommendations.

Orthotics

When the arch of the foot starts to collapse its called pronation and can range from mild to severe.  Sever foot pronation is often referred to as flat feet.   Whether mild or severe, foot pronation compromises the biomechanics of the foot and can lead to many conditions mentioned above.  Basic arch support is available in retail stores and may be enough to make a difference.  However, custom arch support designed for the specific needs of your foot and built to endure years of heavy use are often more cost effective and more capable of meeting the complex needs of the unique structure of your foot.
