Say No to Sugar!

Did you know that the average American consumes about 3 pounds of sugar each week?

Let that sink in…

That is just under half pound per day of sugar. And we’re not talking naturally occurring sugars in fruits and vegetables, we’re talking specifically about added sugars.  There is 33 grams of added sugar in a Coke.

According to the World Health Organization, WHO, the recommended daily serving of sugar for a person with a normal body mass index is 25 grams of sugar or 6 teaspoons, which is equal to about 1 ounce of granulated sugar. A single sugar cube.

Did you know that sugars are added to many packaged foods?  Frozen pizzas, yogurts, milk, etc.  WHO has proposed new nutritional labels that will note how much added sugar is in a product. Since fruits, vegetables, and dairy products have a natural amount of sugar, it’s hard to know what is naturally occurring sugar and what has been added by the manufacturer.

The naturally occurring sugar in fruits and vegetables are formulated for the perfect quantities of sugar, fiber, water, and vitamins to keep you full and energized.

The bottom line is to eat whole, real, organic, local foods. Consume a balanced diet of protein, fruits, vegetables, and an occasional treat. Moderation is key to everything in life.
